1.      Know Your Market

Many small businesses fail simply because what seemed like a good idea at the time didn’t have a ready market.

2.      Know Your Offer

If you don’t know what product or service you are offering how will your customers know? Write it down and define it.

3.      Plan, Budget & Review

Plan your marketing – set a strategy, budget for your marketing expenditure and regularly review your expenditure against budget and results against expectation. Fine tune to maximise your results.

4.      Join a Networking Group(s)

Meet with other businesses in the area join a Chamber of Commerce and or a specialised networking group like BNI. Have your colleagues marketing your business and reciprocate.

5.      Don’t just have a Website – Use It!

Make sure your website is up-to-date and working for you; take active steps to ensure that you are moving up search engine listings. Not doing this is the same as having a brochure and keeping it hidden behind your desk.

6.      Create an Image, a Brand and a Customer Experience

Be recognisable and visible, everything you give a customer or potential customer should clearly show that it is from you. Be aware that every time you or your staff interact with a customer or potential customer they are marketing your business.

7.      Take care when dealing with salespeople

Their object is to sell you something and not to assist you. Make sure that you stick to your strategy and don’t forget that a dollar spent here is a dollar foregone elsewhere.

8.      Involve your staff

Your staff know you and your business, both strengths and weaknesses use that knowledge. Staff who are valued are happier and happier staff equals more sales.

9.      Traditional Media Works for Most Businesses

Unless your business is totally online you cannot ignore the traditional marketing methods but remember marketing your business can be a courtship and not necessarily involve instant gratification.
